The origins of Women's Day trace back to the labor movement of the early 20th century. On March 8, 1857, female garment and textile workers in New York City took to the streets to protest inhumane working conditions, 12-hour workdays, and low wages. On March 8, 1908, 15,000 women marched through Manhattan, chanting the powerful slogan: “Bread and Roses.” Bread symbolized economic security, while roses represented a better life. In 1910, Clara Zetkin, a leader of the international socialist women's movement, proposed establishing an International Women's Day at a conference in Copenhagen, gaining unanimous support. In 1917, the heroic struggle of Russian female workers during the February Revolution ultimately cemented March 8th as this glorious holiday.
